Student Safety & Emergency Protocols

At Trout Creek School, we prioritize a secure environment through the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). This uniform, planned, and practiced response to any incident ensures that students, staff, and first responders are all on the same page.

The Five Safety Actions

The SRP is action-based rather than scenario-based. Below are the five specific actions used in our safety plans:

Action Directive What it Means Official Guide
HOLD "In Your Room or Area" Used to keep hallways clear (e.g., medical emergency). View Poster
SECURE "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors" Used when there is a threat outside the building. View Poster
LOCKDOWN "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" Used when there is a threat inside the building. View Poster
EVACUATE "To a Specified Location" Used to move students to a safer location (e.g., fire). View Poster
SHELTER "State Hazard & Strategy" Used for protection against hazards like weather. View Poster

Parent & Guardian Resources

To help families understand how these protocols work in practice, we recommend reviewing these official resources:

  • 2025 Parent Safety Handout: A one-page summary designed specifically for parents to understand the "Terms of Art" used during drills or real events.

  • SRP Overview Video: A brief video explaining how the protocol creates continuity for students from Pre-K through 12th grade.

  • Sanders County Emergency Alerts: We encourage all families to sign up for local notifications to stay informed of county-wide safety events.

Compliance & Drills

Trout Creek School adheres to Montana Code Annotated 20-1-402, conducting at least eight disaster drills annually. These drills ensure that the five actions—Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter—become second nature to our school community.
